The other GPU does run at a hotter temperatue so I can only assume that in my case the problem was perhaps due to the card overheating.

Sounds as if there is more than one possibility behind this problem. This can be caused by the MS13-057/KB2803821 update (Windows RT, Windows 8, Windows 8 Enterprise) reinstall the update to resolve the issue.
